Writing your C.V.

Writing your CV

Your CV won't get you a job but is your passport to winning a job interview.

We will use your words unchanged but ensure the format is correct and personal details removed before sending your CV to a client with a professional cover sheet. On occasion we may advise you to include more or less detail in certain areas.

General Guidelines

  • Your CV is easiest for us and our clients to handle in Word format with a minimum of graphics, colours, text boxes etc.
  • No more than two sensible, professional looking typefaces please e.g. Arial 11.
  • Aim for around 2 sides of A4 when printed.

It should include, in this order:

Personal details

  • Name
  • Date of birth
  • Availability

Profile

  • About 5 - 10 lines of punchy statements.
  • What you are, what you can do for a company and what you would like to do in your next job.

Education and Qualifications

  • Always in reverse chronological order with dates.
  • If you feel your experience is more important than your qualifications, put them further down.

Additional Training

  • Do not include your cycling proficiency test.
  • Include relevant in house training and accredited training e.g. 16th Edition, Six Sigma, CIPS etc.

Employment History

  • Should start on page 1 and include ALL your jobs since leaving education in reverse chronological order.
  • Account for gaps or periods not working / travelling etc. - an interviewer will ask or assume the worst.
  • State the dates you worked, the employer and your job title(s).
  • A short sentence describing what the employer does and how big they are can help put your job into context - you know about the companies you have worked for but the person reading your CV may not.
  • State your key responsibilities and achievements.
  • State whether jobs were permanent or contract and if you were made redundant.

Interests and Hobbies

  • Keep it short and stick to what you do regularly - you don't want to do a brilliant interview and then be tripped up on this area.

References

  • Work referees are always preferred. We will remove these from your CV before sending it to a client.
  • Our clients would normally ask for references having made you a job offer.

Email your CV to AES* and be considered against all existing vacancies with our clients.

* Your CV will only be presented to a client with your permission.
